January 31, 2008 journal, painting the state of South Carolina with its natural resources. This painting is a lot more than a road map showing the activities past present and future. The painting of South Carolina highlighted as an earthly model of water, dirt, sand, clay, and the Hilton Head Island shoe shape at the Savannah River. South Carolina is the only State where an atom bomb was dropped in 1953 near Florence accidentally but it did not explode thank God. South Carolina was the first to secede and one the first 13 colonies & the first to fire on Fort Sumter occupied by the Union Army 1861. A state with resources wide-spread and I want to commemorate most of it. The state symbol is the palmetto tree. South Carolina was a big part of the Revolutionary and the Civil Wars and it is where the Civil War began over succession from the Union 1 year earlier refusing to pay export tax. Characters such as Senator John C. Calhoun, Strom Thurman, Jimmy Burns and others. The natural resources of South Carolina are water, clay, minerals, pine trees. Fish is a big part of South Carolina industry from the Charleston area. Forestry covers 64% of the state with pine trees and with Cyprus trees in the swampy area of the low country where gray moss grows hanging from the trees. There is a complete change of color from the upstate to Midland's and the coastal area from Charleston to Savannah. The two big no-no's of the state are the tobacco farms in the Northeast and the Savannah River nuclear storage. The crops of South Carolina are cotton, corn, wheat, rice and tobacco as primary crops. South Carolina First to fire on Fort Sumter, first organized in 1670 ordered by England, first to build a submarine. First to sign the Articles of Confederation 1778. Wars-the Revolutionary, the Civil War. Education, agriculture, tourism, marine industry, National Guard, forestry, dairy, clay exports. This is an exciting project to undertake. About South Carolina painting (past- present and future) 10 ft. high, 12 ft. wide. When I received the invitation I did not intend to enter but then I reconsidered realizing it is a once-in-a-lifetime chance for me to paint my state that has so much to offer and I have begun painting on a 10 by 12 ft. canvas showing the minerals underground to the -mountain peaks of the Piedmont, 300 miles from Myrtle Beach to the apple orchards of Oconee County and peaches in Cherokee County. I will show the Midland's and the capitol and the state museum. I will show the fishing industry off Charleston and the port of Charleston with 200 miles of coastline. I will highlight the educational institutions and the agriculture of the state. I will show the cities with the high-rise images and outline the interstate system East, West, North and South. I will show Fort Sumter and the Civil War but not the flag, I will show the South Carolina flag. I will indicate the battle of Cow Pens and all the Revolutionary War activities. I will try to show the monuments of the statesmen beginning with John C. Calhoun and South Carolina as one of the 13 original colonies. I would like to include some music maybe notes to Carolina Moon and some art including the pottery of Dave pottery from Edgefield with respectable mention. I will paint a palmetto tree plus some pine trees and Cyprus in the Charleston area. This is more than a road map. I will put a rainbow up in the North West Side of the state and snowcap the mountains plus paint the trees varigated fall colors that people like to see yearly. I will paint the word resources in an appropriate place on the painting. I am proud to be a South Carolinian but prouder to be a Christian knowing the true name of Yesu The Lord.
